Why Spring Is the Season to Invest in Your Skin’s Future

If Fall is the season of collagen banking, then Spring is the season of collagen building.

Spring is when we begin to emerge from the dryness and dullness of winter, when we start seeing more light, more events, more life. And it is also the perfect time to begin working deeper in the skin, stimulating the very thing that keeps skin firm, resilient, and youthful: collagen.

But before we talk about microneedling, we need to understand collagen itself, because collagen is not just a beauty buzzword. It is the very structure of our skin.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is what gives skin its firmness, density, and strength. Imagine collagen as the scaffolding that holds the skin up from within. When we are young, this scaffolding is thick, organized, and strong. This is why young skin looks firm, smooth, and plump.

However, starting in our mid-20s, collagen production begins to decline by about 1 percent per year. Then, during the five years surrounding menopause, women can lose up to 30 percent of their collagen. This is one of the main reasons why skin can suddenly appear thinner, drier, and less firm during this stage of life. It is not your imagination. It is biology.

As collagen diminishes, the skin’s structure weakens. Firmness gives way to laxity, fine lines become etched into the skin more easily, pores appear larger, and the skin loses that youthful bounce. Elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are responsible for elasticity and hydration, also depend on a healthy collagen network to function properly. Collagen is the foundation that everything else in the skin relies on.

This is where microneedling comes in, and why it has become one of the most studied and trusted treatments in skin rejuvenation.

Microneedling, particularly with a medical-grade device like Dermapen, works by creating thousands of precise, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-channels are not damage in the traditional sense. They are controlled stimulation. The skin perceives these micro-injuries and immediately activates its wound-healing response.

This healing response happens in three phases.

First, the inflammatory phase, where the body increases blood flow and sends growth factors to the area.

Second, the proliferative phase, where fibroblast cells begin producing new collagen and elastin.

Third, the remodeling phase, where this new collagen is reorganized and strengthened over the following weeks and months.

This is why microneedling is not a quick fix treatment. It is a regenerative treatment. It works with your body, not against it, to rebuild the skin from within.

Clinical studies have shown that a series of microneedling treatments can increase collagen and elastin production by up to 400% over the course of six months, while improving fine lines, acne scarring, skin texture, and overall skin firmness.

Because microneedling works by stimulating the skin’s natural repair process, the results continue to improve for several months after the treatment series is completed as new collagen is formed and remodeled within the skin.

This is also why doing only one microneedling treatment does not produce the same results as a series. Collagen stimulation is cumulative, and each treatment builds on the previous one, triggering new collagen formation and strengthening the skin over time.

Microneedling is not about creating a temporary glow. It is about triggering a biological process that rebuilds the skin’s structure over time through collagen production and remodeling.

What makes microneedling unique is that it does not add volume artificially and it does not thin the skin. It dramatically improves the quality and thickness of the skin itself. In other words, it helps your skin behave like younger skin again.

When Should You Start Microneedling?

Correction, Prevention, and Maintenance

One of the most common questions I get in the studio is: “When should I start microneedling?”

The answer depends on the goal. In skin health, we generally work in three phases: correction, prevention, and maintenance.

Prevention (Late 20s to Early 30s)

As I mentioned earlier, collagen production begins to decline in our mid to late 20s. This is when prevention becomes more powerful than correction. At this stage, microneedling can be done once or twice a year to stimulate collagen, maintain skin density, refine pores, and keep the skin functioning like younger skin for longer.

Most people wait until they see lines and sagging to start doing something. But the real secret to youthful skin is not correction. It is preservation.

Correction (30s, 40s, 50s and beyond)

This is when we begin to correct visible concerns such as fine lines, skin laxity, acne scarring, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture.

For correction, a series of treatments is recommended because collagen remodeling is cumulative. Typically, treatments are performed every 5–6 weeks in a series of 3–6 treatments depending on the condition we are treating.

For acne scarring, we often need multiple sessions because we are rebuilding damaged collagen structures. For pigmentation, we combine microneedling with brightening and pigment-regulating ingredients like the B3 Plus serum from O'Cosmedics. For aging and skin laxity, we focus on strengthening the dermis and improving skin thickness and elasticity.

This is why microneedling is not a one-time treatment. It is a skin remodeling program.

Maintenance (Once Results Are Achieved)

Once we have corrected and rebuilt the skin, maintenance becomes the key to long-term results. Most of my clients move into a maintenance plan of one to two microneedling treatments per year (usually Spring/Fall) to continue stimulating collagen and slow down the natural collagen decline that comes with aging.

Think of it like going to the gym. You don’t work out once and expect to stay strong forever. Skin works the same way.

How Microneedling Helps Different Skin Concerns

Microneedling is not only an anti-aging treatment. It is a skin quality treatment.

Aging Skin Stimulates collagen and elastin, improving firmness, softening fine lines, and strengthening the skin so it behaves more like younger skin.

Hyperpigmentation Helps regulate pigment production and improves the penetration of brightening ingredients like the ones found in the DP Meso-Glide BL add-on serum that will gradually improve overall skin tone.

Acne Scarring One of the most effective treatments for acne scars because it helps remodel and rebuild damaged collagen, improving the depth and texture of scars over time.

Enlarged Pores and Texture By strengthening the collagen around the pore walls, microneedling can visibly refine and smooth the skin.

Overall Skin Health Even if there is no major concern, microneedling improves skin thickness, circulation, product absorption, and overall skin resilience.

A Very Important Truth About Microneedling

Microneedling does not replace good skincare. Microneedling enhances good skincare.

If the skin is not properly prepared before treatment and properly cared for after treatment, the skin will not produce collagen efficiently. Collagen production requires vitamin A, a healthy skin barrier, and controlled inflammation.

Stimulation without preparation can lead to inflammation. Stimulation with preparation leads to regeneration.

This is why in my studio, microneedling is always done as part of a treatment plan, not as a stand-alone appointment. Proper skin preparation before treatment and proper post-treatment care are what determine the quality of collagen your skin produces.

Because real results are not created in one day. They are created with a plan, consistency and patience.

Why Medical-Grade Microneedling Is Different

Not all microneedling treatments are created equal. Depth, speed, needle quality, treatment intervals, and skin preparation all determine the outcome. Medical-grade devices like Dermapen are designed to create precise, vertical micro-channels at controlled depths, which allows for predictable, safe, and effective collagen stimulation.

This matters because the goal is not to create trauma in the skin. The goal is to create controlled stimulation that leads to collagen remodeling.

When performed correctly, microneedling can improve:

  • Skin thickness

  • Fine lines

  • Acne scars

  • Stretch marks

  • Pigmentation

  • Pore size

  • Overall skin strength and resilience

This is why microneedling is considered a collagen induction therapy, not just a facial treatment.

The Big Picture

When you invest in collagen, you are not just treating how your skin looks today. You are investing in how your skin will look five and ten years from now. Trends come and go. Quick fixes come and go. But collagen is always in style. And the earlier we start preserving it, the better the skin ages.

Microneedling is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve skin quality, but the treatment itself is only one part of the process. Skin preparation, correct depth, treatment intervals, and post-treatment care are what truly determine the results.

This is why all microneedling treatments at Shoreline Glow begin with a consultation and a skin preparation phase. This ensures the skin is healthy, resilient, and ready to produce strong, healthy collagen.

PLEASE NOTE: Microneedling is not just about the treatment. It is about how the skin heals afterward. That is why every microneedling treatment at Shoreline Glow includes a 14-day post-procedure express facial; because collagen is built during the healing phase, not the day of the procedure.

If you are considering microneedling in Kitchener Waterloo and want to approach your skin with a long-term plan rather than a quick fix, I would be honored to guide you through that process.
