Why Traditional Soap Is One of the Worst Things You Can Use on Your Skin

This past week I found myself having the same conversation with several clients in my studio. Many were surprised to learn that the very soap they have been using for years may actually be one of the biggest contributors to dryness, irritation, and premature skin aging. So I felt called to bring this conversation here, because once you understand how the skin truly functions, your product choices begin to shift in a much more intentional way.
Healthy skin naturally sits within a slightly acidic range, typically between a pH of 4.5 and 5.5. This is not random. This delicate acidity forms what we call the acid mantle, a thin, invisible protective layer made up of sebum, sweat, and beneficial microorganisms. It plays a vital role in keeping the skin resilient, hydrated, and protected from external aggressors. When this layer is intact, the skin is able to defend itself, retain moisture, and maintain overall balance.
The issue begins when we introduce products that disrupt this natural environment. Traditional soap is highly alkaline, usually sitting at a pH of around 9. Even products marketed as “pH balanced,” including well-known brands, often sit closer to a neutral pH of 7. While neutral may sound gentle, it is still significantly more alkaline than what your skin actually needs.
To give you a visual reference, Borax sits at a pH of approximately 9.3 and is known to irritate or burn the skin on contact. When you begin to think about applying products within that same alkaline range on a daily basis, it becomes easier to understand how cumulative damage can occur over time. The skin may not react dramatically in a single use, but repeated exposure slowly weakens its natural defenses.
When alkaline products are used on the skin, they disrupt the acid mantle, leaving the barrier compromised. I often explain this to my clients by comparing it to stripping the paint and primer off a metal lamp post and then wondering why it begins to rust. Without that protective layer, the skin becomes far more vulnerable to dehydration, sensitivity, and environmental stress.
Over time, this imbalance can show up as persistent dryness, increased sensitivity, breakouts, inflammation, and even an acceleration in visible skin aging. The skin is incredibly intelligent and will always try to rebalance itself, but when it is being disrupted daily, it never fully has the chance to restore.
This is why modern skincare has shifted away from traditional soap-based cleansing and toward formulations that respect the skin’s natural pH. A well-formulated cleanser should support the acid mantle, not strip it away. It should leave the skin feeling comfortable, soft, and balanced rather than tight or dry.
This philosophy is something I am very intentional about in my studio, which is why I love working with the Ginger&Me body care line. These formulations are designed to cleanse effectively while maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier. The skin is left feeling clean, but also nourished and supported. There is a beautiful balance between results and experience, where even something as simple as your daily shower becomes a moment of restoration rather than depletion.
At the end of the day, healthy skin is not about doing more or using harsher products. It is about understanding the skin’s natural intelligence and choosing products that work in harmony with it. Your skin was designed to function in a slightly acidic environment, and your routine should honor that.
So the next time you reach for a traditional bar of soap for your face or body, take a moment to pause and consider what your skin truly needs. Sometimes the most powerful shift in your skincare journey comes not from adding more, but from removing what has quietly been working against you all along.
