A sunless glow is more than just a color, it’s a confidence booster, a mood lifter, and when done right, a ritual of self-care. Whether you're new to self-tanning or a seasoned bronzing goddess, the key to a flawless, long-lasting tan lies in what happens before, during, and after your tan.
At Shoreline Glow, I’ve curated the ultimate tanning routine using two powerhouse professional skincare lines: SELF by O’Cosmedics and GINGER&ME Neurocosmedics. Together, they nourish, support, and elevate your glow from prep to fade.
Let’s walk through the 3-step tanning ritual for your most radiant, streak-free glow yet:
STEP 1: Pre-Tan Preparation
Timeline: Begin 3–4 days before your self-tan or spray tan
Glowing skin starts long before the mousse or professional tanning solution goes on. The more hydrated and smooth your skin is leading up to your tan, the more even and longer-lasting your results will be.
🧤 Exfoliate Gently Yet Thoroughly
SELF Exfoliating Glove: Use in the shower to remove dead skin cells, product buildup, and previous tan residue. Focus on dry-prone areas like Top of hands, fingers, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet.
Pro Tip: Exfoliate 24–48 hours before tanning, not the same day, to avoid sensitivity or uneven absorption. I professionally recommend exfoliating twice a week to keep skin smooth and free of buildup, especially important in Kitchener-Waterloo, where hard water can leave mineral deposits that interfere with tanning product absorption.
🧴 Hydrate Your Skin (But Not on Tan Day!)
GINGER&ME Shower Body Oil (available in New Day, Sunshine & Reset) – Use instead of drying soaps to gently cleanse while deeply hydrating the skin.
GINGER&ME Body Butter (available in Brave, Grateful, Happy); Apply daily up to the day before your tan to restore moisture, repair skin barrier function, and keep your skin plump and smooth.
⚠️ Important: Skip body oils and butters on tanning day, as they can create a barrier that interferes with the development of your tan.
STEP 2: Day-of Tan Application
Whether you're using SELF at home or prepping for a professional spray tan
Now that your skin is prepped and smooth, it’s time for the magic. The SELF by O’Cosmedics tanning range makes it easy to achieve professional-level results at home with clean, nourishing ingredients and intuitive tools.
☁️ Choose Your Tanning Formula:
SELF Tanning Mousse (Dark or Ultra Dark); Lightweight and velvety with rich, even depth of color.
Apply with:
SELF Velvet Tanning Mitt - For smooth, streak-free application
SELF Back Tan Applicator - To reach hard-to-get areas
SELF Buffing Brush - To blend hands, feet, ankles, and facial contours for a seamless, airbrushed finish.
SELF Nourishing Tanning Oil (with bronzer) - Ideal for a radiant, buildable glow and instant color. Great for last-minute events or when you want color without waiting hours.
⚠️ No moisturizer, oils, or perfume on tan day. Skin should be clean, dry, and free of residue for optimal results.
⏳ Timing Around Showers Matters
For best results, avoid applying your self-tanner immediately after showering, especially if you’ve used hot water, harsh soaps, or live in an area with hard water (like Kitchener-Waterloo). Showering can temporarily raise your skin’s pH, which may interfere with how the tanning solution develops.
Wait at least 45-60 minutes after showering to allow your skin’s pH to rebalance before applying your tan.
Once the tanning product is on your skin, avoid showering for at least 6–8 hours to allow the DHA (the active tanning ingredient) to fully develop. Rinsing too early can result in a lighter or uneven tan.
Pro Tip: Apply your tan in the evening and let it develop overnight. Thursday night is a client favorite, you’ll wake up glowing just in time for the weekend.
STEP 3: Post-Tan Care & Glow Maintenance
Keep your tan even, radiant, and fade-proof
This is where most tans are made or lost. Hydration and mindful care are the secrets to graceful fading and glowing longevity.
💧 Nourish & Hydrate (Once Your Tan Has Set)
GINGER&ME Bath & Body Oil – Apply to damp skin or add to your bath 1–2 times per month. This helps maintain hydration and elasticity without disturbing your tan.
GINGER&ME Shower Body Oil – Continue using this gentle cleanser instead of harsh soaps to preserve your tan and keep skin soft.
🌿 Build & Maintain Your Glow
SELF Gradual Tanning Body Butter; Begin using 2–3 days post-tan, then every other day to enhance, deepen, or extend your glow. It also works beautifully on its own for a subtle, buildable bronze between mousse applications.
SELF Hydrating Tanning Water; Many of us use brightening or exfoliating skincare on the face, which can cause color to fade faster. Mist this gentle, color-building water every other night to maintain an even, sun-kissed tone that matches the rest of your body.
