Pregnancy is one of life’s most transformative journeys and your skin often reflects every step of that change. From the hormonal shifts that can trigger breakouts, dryness, or sensitivity, to that radiant “pregnancy glow” people talk about, your complexion becomes a mirror of everything your body is navigating.
At Shoreline Glow, I believe skincare should never be a source of stress, especially during such a tender season. Your skin deserves to be supported with intention, not confusion. And while many ingredients in your current regimen may still be safe to use, there are a few that are best paused while you’re expecting or breastfeeding.
If you're unsure where to begin, this blog is here to guide you.
You’ll find:
Clear information on ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
A list of O'COSMEDICS products that are not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding
Safe, effective alternatives to keep your skin glowing
Gentle reminders that you don’t have to figure this out alone
Because even while nurturing new life, your skin’s health and confidence still matter.
Skincare During Pregnancy: A Time for Gentle Shifts
Pregnancy naturally alters how your skin behaves. You may find yourself experiencing:
More breakouts or congestion
Increased dryness or dehydration
Heightened sensitivity
The appearance of pigmentation (especially melasma)
In moments like these, it’s tempting to reach for our most active products, exfoliants, clarifiers, anti-aging heroes but not all ingredients that serve us well pre-pregnancy are safe during this delicate time. Some could have the potential to be absorbed into the bloodstream, which is why being selective now is both wise and empowering.
Let’s take a closer look at the two ingredients to temporarily avoid, and how to work around them with care.
Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
❌ Salicylic Acid (BHA)
Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid commonly used to treat breakouts, blackheads, and inflammation. However, studies have shown that high doses of salicylic acid, particularly oral forms can pose risks to fetal development. Although topical use is generally considered safer, it’s recommended to avoid higher concentrations as a precaution, especially in medical-grade skincare formulas.
❌ Retinol (Vitamin A derivatives)
Retinol is a powerful anti-aging and acne-fighting ingredient, but during pregnancy, it’s best to avoid it altogether. High levels of Vitamin A, especially in retinoid form, have been linked to birth defects. Even topical application can potentially be absorbed into the bloodstream in small amounts, which is why most healthcare professionals recommend suspending the use of retinol throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
O'COSMEDICS Products to Avoid While Pregnant or Nursing
O'COSMEDICS is a clinical-grade, results-driven line I proudly carry at Shoreline Glow.
While most of their collection is clean, gentle, and pregnancy-safe, the following products do contain either Salicylic Acid or Retinol and should be set aside during this season:
Pure C + BHA A potent brightening and clarifying powder that contains salicylic acid, effective for acne, but not safe for pregnancy.
Potent Clearing Serum Designed to combat congestion and acne, this serum includes salicylic acid and is not recommended for expecting or nursing mothers.
Potent Retinol Serum This high-performance anti-aging serum features retinol, which should be avoided during pregnancy due to absorption concerns.
Retinol Concentrate With 1% pure retinol, this concentrate offers deep rejuvenation, but is too strong for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Safe Alternatives to Keep Your Glow Going
Pregnancy-safe skincare doesn’t mean you have to give up results. With a few thoughtful substitutions, you can continue to care for your skin with effectiveness and peace of mind.
Look for ingredients like:
✅ Hyaluronic Acid – Deeply hydrating and completely safe. Helps relieve dryness and keeps your skin plump and comfortable.
✅ Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Supports the barrier, reduces redness, and brightens skin tone, without irritation.
✅ Lactic Acid – A gentler form of AHA that helps with mild exfoliation and texture without the risks of stronger acids.
✅ Zinc-Based Mineral Sunscreen – Hormonal shifts can increase sun sensitivity and pigmentation. O'COSMEDICS Mineral Pro SPF 50 offers safe, non-toxic UVA/UVB protection and is ideal during pregnancy.
If you’re struggling with breakouts, sensitivity, or pigment changes during this time, I offer pregnancy-safe facials and skincare consults tailored to your current needs.
Whether it's your first trimester or you're newly postpartum, your skin deserves extra tenderness and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
